I am considering trading in my Xbox 360 towards a 40gb PS3. I am curious how the PS3 online is compared to xbox live?

it's pretty much the same. right now the features of course aren't up to par. but soon with Home coming out it will be closer to what XBL is. and yes its free, which isn't a bad thing, the connection and service isnt better or worse than live. there's also no headset with it, but if you get warhawk on disc you get a blue tooth headset.

PS3's online service should be free. You can't even send a game invite from inside the game. You have to exit back to the dashboard to send a game invite. Also the load times on most games are at least twice as long as they are on the 360 because the Blu-Ray loads alot slower than old fashioned DVD. Also, the games I watched my friend play on his PS3 were very laggy, but that could have just been situational; lord knows there's lag on XBL from time to time as well. Oh, and if you like to play your own music in the background while playing games, you'll miss that on the PS3 as well.
I'd say that if you want a PS3, hold on to your 360 and wait until you can afford a PS3 as well. A PS3 might be a fine addition to a 360, but someone who is used to a 360 will probably be disappointed with just a PS3.

Maybe I'm a fangirl, I don't know. I haven't had a Playstation since the original one way back when. But my friends who have both systems, say that their 360's get ALOT more attention. I'd just hate for you to trade in your 360 and then regret it. If you get the PS3, and it does turn out to be a suitable replacement for your 360; you can always trade the 360 in then and put the money towards your credit card or some PS3 games.

yeah you can't, but features like that are definitely coming. they know the features they're missing and are updating accordingly. however i dont know where the load times came from, i've had super quick load times, and most of the games i have for my ps3 load up faster than any on 360. me and about 4 of my other friends were at my friends house all hooked up wirelesly to his same net all on warhawk and we had no lag at all, the connectivity is fine, especially the wireless. the ps3 needs a lot in the online features, but this year it most likely will be cleaned up and will be almost no different than that of 360. so yeah if you want that fresh start, just maybe wait until Home comes out. any 360er, or second lifer should love and enjoy that.

Eh this a tough call for what it is...PS3 is good but if u like online games stick to 360. I had my PS3 for about a month and traded it in. Its a real nice movie player. As far as home goes IMO Sony is wasting too much effort on it....its a gimmick from what ive seen. A game to control ure games? Thats basically what it is. Its eating up memory...eh but Im ranting honestly...most games coming out on PS3 are coming out on Xbox....and in most cases run just a tad better.IF u like games keep xbox...if u like movies...than get a ps3

I had a PS3 before a 360, so my viewpoint may be a bit different. I only recently got a 360 and am very glad I did, that said I wouldn't trade my PS3 for the world (well, ok I would because I would get everyones PS3s if I got the world...but anyways). Live is definitely better for online gaming currently, although Sony is working to add many of the features that make Live successful. PSN is also considering the addition of flat rate subscription that would allow unlimited downloads of older titles, etc. Another thing to consider is that the current install base of the 360 is much greater than the PS3, meaning you'll more likely find a good game on Live, as more PS3s enter the home this will balance out.
I have both systems mainly so I can enjoy the first party games and exclusives, when I want to play something multiplayer I usually go 360.

Yes Cazy you should defenitly keep your 360 as you have already chosen. Which is smart. the PS3 is a nice machine, and in all reality the online is getting better, there just isnt as big of a following as 360. If your into online ladder matches, the ladders are super flooded with 360 games, and PS3 games are not nearly as populated.
Its still a good experience though.
My main point though im going to throw out in this is though. When you get a PS3 be sure to get a 60gig not a 40gig, the 40 gig has no backwards compatability at all. The 60 gig has 95% backwards compatability.
I own all of the Next gen systems from handheld to home system, and they all have there own benifits.
So if you can keep your 360 and still get your PS3 then dude. Your liveing the high life. ^_^
Have fun........Oh and if you do get a PS3, my PSN name is Largo_H2O.......Get haze when it comes out we shall play some co-op story mode. ^_^

i love my ps3 and my 360, i think all gamers should have both. just for the mere fact of the different array of games. some may say that most are coming to the 360. but some have better controls and would only have the good full experience on ps3, DMC4 for example. sony has always had the better single player games IMO, and 360 will always have the better multiplayer, so having both would give you the best of both worlds.

Well I just picked up the 80gb Ps3 and heres my honest opinion the xbox 360 is alot better on the online interface side of things and it is also alot better in aspect that your connection to another person is alot better meaning friends list acheivements and just the all out seeing where your friends are and things like that. Now also in my opinion the PS3 has some great graphics and does alot better on your sound I have both the 360 and the ps3 connected thru hdmi on a 50" dlp samsung and the in game ambience seems a bit crispier on the Ps3. PS3 has a browser and you can choose to add a different browser like firefox or even IE.
PROS on the ps3:
1. great sound
2. browser
3. graphics
4. free to connect to online
5. wireless sixaxis controllers
6. media card slots
7. blu ray
8. blue tooth connectivity
9. sleek look
10. just starting to power the system with upgrades like (home, etc.....)
11. great internal hardware
Cons about ps3:
1. alittle difficult to track your friends
2. all games are available on 360 except for a select few
3. doesnt come with headset
4. the interface takes a bit of getting use to
5. problems with nat settings and stuff like that.
personally I would say get it reason they do have some great games like Drakes: unchartered and heavenly sword plus some good ones on the way like metal gear and grand turismo. So if you have the money to spend get it and enjoy it cause it is the only thing you need for you entertainment center, once you get it you can get rid of your stereo and your dvd player and even your PC cause playstation can have a printer attached to it and other accesories. Well i hope this gives you a bit more info. But dude never get rid of the 360 cause it is the myspace of console gaming.

I would like to point out, however, that Orange Box for PS3 was not made by the same people that made it for 360 and PC. There was a highly negative outlook on OBs chances on PS3 from the start. Load times on 360 seem to be longer in my experience for most games, but in either case they aren't long (or frequent) enough to cause any trouble.

There are two large pros of the Xbox 360:
1: They had more times to throw out more games. So they have more hit titles. Most that are out on PS3.
2: Live is a better community.
The PS3 has the same amount:
1: Promises of better games
2: It doesn't break down as often.
I think thats about it, it's all about preference over these two.

The 360 would of been much better had they just waited to release it. People i know have had alot of problems with the 360 at launch, but i've never had a problem with the PS3. Plus it started with high def capibility, Go Blu ray, which the 360 lacked. The graphics i've seen are better on the PS3, but the 360 does have better multiplayer. I still like the PS3 better by far.

The PS3 does have better graphics but the online interface is sub par compared to Live. Since I got my PS3 I may have played 3-4 hours. But in the same period of time I have played the 360 over 30 hours. If PS3 had a online community like Xbox then it would be better competition but until then... it is just a glorified Blu Ray player.

Well, the PS3 is at the beginning of its life-cycle. The slew of games to be released for it are yet to come. I hate the PS3 vs Xbox debates though. I figure if you can afford both you should own both *shrugs* Although it looks like most games are going to be for both platforms, so in that case I'd go with PS3 as it's newer and better technology.

everyone always fails to mention the themes and gamerpictures. at roughly 100-150 msp a pop, it doesnt seem like much, but it piles up, that's about $1.25 a piece for like 5 60 px by 60 px pictures. with the ps3 everything is free, wallpapers free, gamerpictures free, themes free, and not just a different picture for each blade like 360, we're talking a complete transformation of all the icons, sounds, background, the entire theme is changed. and it's all free. some people may think that GP and themes dont mean that much, but honestly, why are we being charged for pictures? they should always be free, 360 pretty much rips everyone off in that aspect.

I'd say get it when you get the dough, I know 360's Hardware failure is bad but Hold on to your 360 cause you might miss it when it's gone. I also have friends who own both systems and the 360 gets more playtime than their PS3's so save the dough for when you can get your hands on the PS3.
I'm a huge Tekken fan so sooner or later I'll have to buy the PS3 but I will keep my 360 and even then I am sure my 360 will have most of my playtime.
I see a few great games on the PS3 but they're not good enough for me to go out and buy a PS3 right now.... So, Hold on to your 360 and buy the PS3 as well if you really wanna get it.

I dunno about a lot of stuff you said. I've been a PS3 user since day one.
You can send game invites. How else would we get our girls into wars and private matches? Some games have more support for in game social capabilities but most have the general friend list based options. Also, the next update will allow the XMB to be accessed from all games.
You just can't send friend invites on certain games. However, there is a "recently played with" list that lists the 100 (I may be incorrect) last people you've played with.
For example, on Call of Duty 4 there is no built in friends list. Instead, you can send game invites to players on your PSN friends list. On Resistance: Fall of Man, however, you have the option of messaging/viewing your PSN friends list AND adding people in-game. It depends on the game itself, really.
There's barely ANY lag with games that involves general console speed (not internet based). The speed of the PS3 is twice as fast as the 360 (go check out the Guinness Book of World Records: Gaming Edition for more on that). The networking system for the PS3 is similar to the 360 as NAT type effects gameplay. If your NAT type is 3 (compare to 360's NAT type of strict) you have limited capabilities. A bit of port forwarding, and you're good to go.
There is no custom music playlist support, you are correct. That will change. Very soon.
The PS3 has MULTI USER chat capabilities, meaning instead of just private chatting with ONE person you can do it with up to 6 and when Home comes out this spring it will expand to infinite.
I have a 360 and a PS3 and I hardly touch my 360. Not because it's not a great console (because it is), but just because I'm so used to the Playstation. I'm in no way a fan girl -- I play games, not consoles.

like a lot have said already, they showed have waited on the release date for the 360 instead of pushing to get it out on the market. i've never had a problem with mine.. minus the occasional freezing or lagging, but a few of my friends are on their 2nd, 3rd console already. it's expensive to have to replace a 360 every year or two.
plus the point that Skywalker made that i actually never sat down and thought about. the cost of all the 360's options; wallpaper, themes, pictures, etc.. it does add up if you're the type that likes to download all these things (i am one of these people).
however HateMaker makes an awesome point in the multiplayer area. i haven't played on the PS3 to experience what their multi has to offer, but the 360 has enough for me. none of my friends have a PS3 and there's lots more people here that have a 360, so being able to game online with more people is kick a** :).
..but that being said, i have to give the graphics on the PS3 props.. their amazing, and the technology that it holds compared to the 360 is crazy, but i'm still a 360 fan. i think eventually though my boyfriend and i will get a PS3, but like most of you have said.. hold onto the 360 <3!!!

Lol guys if you go on graphics and power the gamecube was more powerful than the PS2 but the desgin didnt allow them to use all the power which it sounds like Sony have done and no offense to anyone who says its powerful but please the game with the most cineamatic graphics and most realistic features is on 360 so :pulls rude sign:. But anyway the fact is that the PS3 has more power just that desgin issues with the threads linking the cores are not able to handle the advanced AI and extremely good graphics with a very smooth frame rate. The way it has been made means that it can only produce the two and let down on one of them.

um...i'd really like to know what game that is. if your talking about gears, that's the most unrealistic BS game ever, and if mass effect, that's just the same cover up graphics, shine. uncharted alone, graphically, looks twice as good as any 360 game, and if you read any review it feels like your in a movie everything about it, and has perfectly great frame rate, and decent AI. honestly dont know where your getting this bullocks info. not to mention that killzone 2 is going to be the greatest looking game i've ever seen: http://youtube.com/watch?v=-wFd9gTpyt0 everytime i've watched that i nearly crap my pants. and that's youtube quality video, just imagine that on a nice HDTV with surround sound. god *faint*
i'm not saying the 360 is terrible, but lets face it, graphically the 360 could never compare. and that's not all there is to games i know that. but in that aspect yes. and honestly, if a shooter comes out that the graphics look exactly the same, call of duty 4 for example, i'll most likely get it on 360, the controller is just better suited for shooters. plus those damn friggin achievements, i hate them, but always want more. there's no winning in a console war, because each console has something more and better than the other, each has their own good thing about it, and that's that. i love my 360, and my ps3 :)

Grapicly the ps3 blows the 360 away. I cant wait for the new socom and gran turismo to come out. Those will be the deciding factor if i keep my ps3 or sell it. Ok well after the first week i traded in all my ps3 games for 360 games. The online experience is much better on live and it should be considering how long it has been out. Grapicly the ps3 blows the 360 away. I cant wait for the new socom and gran turismo to come out. Those will be the deciding factor if i keep my ps3 or sell it. Other then that it is a great blu ray player!!
see all you online multiplayer people have to wait until home comes out before you get a ps3. yeah right now it really isn't up to par, but seriously, with home it's basically going to be the same, except instead of going through interfaces to get stuff, you walk around and talk to random people :p. i cant waaaiiiittt.
U3 is a great game, the only reason i dont like it is that it looks exactly like gears, the main character looks exactly like marcus and dom put together, with the red locust dress clothing.

Dude I can almost guarantee that I will not be coming back to H2O. Right now there is only one other PS3 player so I will have to see how recruitment goes. Heck considering it will be like 6 months till SOCOM comes out others may come over to the PS3. And with Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Army of Two coming out those will definitely be active. Well I will be playing with yall for sure. Just not "with" you. :o
