I have been playing Mass Effect now since last night and I must say I am very impressed with the game. For those of you who don't know what the game is it is a Sci Fi RPG/FPS game. All combat is in real time and the only time the game 'pauses' is when you go to switch weapons via pop up menu or change your mappable power. Character creation has you choosing if you want to play as the guy on the main cover or create your own male or female custom character. I chose female. I was then given some choices as to my characters name (first name only, cant change last name so you are stuck as Whoever Shepard) early history (birth, life up to 18, ect). After this I was able to choose my character Psychological Profile (things that happened during my life that affected me mentally). Finally I was able to choose a class (there are 6) and what my characters face would look like (I made my character asian). I started the game thinking that these were just cookie cutter things thrown in to make it seem like my choices for history and psychological profile made a difference, well it did. As I play through the game people mention about my history or stuff that happened to me and it also changes the story. Not to mention there are tough (and I mean TOUGH) decisions in this game that will change the course of the games history (and make you feel like crap if you have any kind of a heart). As for combat, its like a fps, kinda like gears of war actually, the over the shoulder camera, the pressing A to run like a mad man (or woman) in combat (if you have the endurance) and also being able to use objects as cover (which btw is not always safe, seems like alot if everything is movable/destructible). The AI in combat seems to be very good and I've died so many times to it.. you can't just run and gun you have to play it smart, use cover, use abilities, use grenades, use anything you can because they are and will do the same. The achievements are interesting as well, it seems you may have to play through 3 or 4 times to get them because there are achievements for playing through once on any difficulty, twice on any difficulty, through on hardcore and through on insanity. From the beginning you can only choose Easy Normal or Hard. I havent even touched the surface of this game but its very addictive and I am loving every moment of it.
Oh and if you are wondering how I got Mass Effect a whole week and 3 days early, I was on the internet yesterday afternoon and seen some posts about K-Mart selling it early. Little did I know someone was ahead of me and already went and purchased the game for me (today is my Birthday =) ) so this is how I came across it. There were 3 copies left so if anyone is lucky you might be able to find one.
