Recently, my monitor has begun to act very peculiar.

Every now and then during the day, the screen will go dim, but still show things, then a few seconds later it goes black. No notification of loose cables, nothing. I think it may be overheating, but I'm not completely sure.

Monitor is a 19 inch HP pavilion f1703 LCD.

So any ideas if its just overheating or what?

If its still under warranty i'd suggest contacting HP about it, it sounds like the main backlight is failing, which can be caused by a variety of reasons, including just a defective monitor.

I had the same probley some time ago, but it was my Video card overheating, your system might be trying to save the video card and in turn shutting the picture on the monitor off.

Is the monitor going off completly like loosing power? or just the picture is going away?

true good point. Nvidia I know has thermal diodes in many of their cards, you can check the temps, usually they can run (at least in my lappy) up to around 90c before being throttled! (desktop variants i'm guessing run cooler). Don't know if ATI does it as well, can't say i've fiddled around with my old desktop lately.

Do you happen to be seeing artifacts while playing games as well? If so, this could be a pretty clear sign of over-heating. Try opening your computer case, and aim a fan towards your graphics card. It will be a temporary solution, but atleast it should help you figure out if it's caused by overheating.

You could also try to downclock the card.

One of those might work to keep it down a bit too. I modded a normal CPU fan onto mine, not one of those huge ones but those crappy stock ones.

Nope, nothing like that. The screen will literally go dim for a second, as if the light got turned down, then it goes black. That is it.

Perhaps this monitor is just reaching the end of it's rope.

Nevermind. Problem found. I have a defective model. HP f1703, certain ones go dead shortly after the 1 year mark.

It never ends! Monitor replaced, works perfectly! Except now I notice there is a spot in the middle of the screen where it seems everything becomes blurred. -_-

Call HP support, and enrich their lives by telling them how much their products suck. Then demand a new one.

Always be polite with tech support, they are much more willing to help if you're not an arse to em. And both HP and Dell make some very nice displays, although rarely are the nice ones the kind that come with your PC :-/ (Dell has some high quality large 24+ " monitors, while HP has some really darn nice high def TVs which include DVI inputs.

Agree, I do support for circut city and if the person on the other line is polite I'm more willing to go out of my way to help them or find someone who can, rather then if there a-holes, I want to just transfer them around till they just hang up lol:eek:
