View Full Version : Xbox 360 Freezing

Well as the title of the topic states, my xbox 360 has started freezing. The first time it happened was when I started playing NFS: Carbon. At the time I thought it was that game that had a bug. Unfourtunately, since then it's started happening in other games too. In NFS it happened pretty randomly, but in other games it only seems to happen during loadings.
My fear is that this means that the end is near for Lucy (my Xbox). Are my fears justified? My Xbox is a second generation (the supposedly good ones from 2006), so I'm kinda confused.
Anyone know what's going on? Is Lucy dieing?

I've had two 2006 xboxes break on me, lasted around 4-6 months each :S.
I bought NFS Carbon a while back and it wouldn't work for me (Froze) then other things stopped working so i though maybe it was overheating, turned it off and blam, Xbox 360 paperweight, red lights, error message and all.
I'd say the chances are favourable that your 360 might be on it's way out. :(
Could be wrong though.

Carbon worked fine for me. The only problem I had was that it would freeze completely randomly... I'd smash into a cop car or bump into a wall or whatever and poof everything would stand still as if time froze.
Before putting Carbon into my poor Lucy I never had a problem with her. The only other game that froze her up was Vegas, but that happened to almost everyone. Now games that didn't use to freeze are freezing.

Not yet. i don't want to call someone who I probably won't understand and who won't understand me unless I absolutely have to.

When I got the 3 red lights I started looking stuff up. Microsoft's site states that one of the symptoms of the impending doom is your 360 freezing up. Unfortunately right now I can't remember the link. I would call tech support or you could wait until you get the red lights. Either way I think it's inevitable.

as long as they send me a new one when it does happen I don't care lol
but mine's a 2006 model which is not supposed to have such problems.

Microsoft did a poor job of creating the 360.
maybe on the xbox 720 and xbox 1440 they won't freeze up...
lol.

True, but what's surprising is they're actually giving support.

Last I heard they updated their warranty to cover all xboxes for a year. It was 90 days prior to that I believe, unless you bought the extended one. Now they've updated it once more and are offering 3 years protection. Some might already be aware of this, but it's news to me. Good news too.

oh and to kind of help try to insure it from overheating i bought a fan thing that connects on the back of the xbox, and i can blast anything out of my xbox and it stays cool now. =d

From what I hear, the heat sync is absolutely terrible in the 360, and by replacing it, it'll prevent your 360 from turning into a time bomb. I wish I still had that link to where it showed you how to do it.
Of coruse, I don't condone cracking your 360 open in the least bit. Bad things happen to consoles when people who don't know what they are doing crack them open.
Nvr4get my Playstation 2.

Well, during the time the 360 came out, it always had issues, especially the overheating, thus they sell those $25-$60 cooling kit solutions. However, while getting a 360 may seem great, you will sooner or later find out what it really is... Just another half-finished project created by Microsoft. At least they fixed the original XBOX's overheating issues after week3 or 4 I believe. I am just going to say, mod your 360 for a water cooling unit, and that should solve it. Friend had a 360, fried the chip, sent it in, got new one, fried again, sent it in, got new one, hooked up water cooling block, never had any issues again.

But those fans apparently cause other problems.

The inter cooler messes up the 360 more. It takes power away from things and frys the box faster. just letting u know

I want to put it in a laptop case and watercool it. But it will be a pain in the arse to do so.

lol I don't know about all the overheating is about. Mine's on 12-16 hours a day even on the hottest days of summer and it gets warm at most.
I fixed the freezing issue. I ran the HDD maintenance thing, and it seemed to solve the problem. The dashboard loads quicker now too!

You must be talking about the back mounted one. Somewhere on this forum I posted a tl;dr entry about how the back mounted ones are pure D crap because they interrupt the power source. The bottom mounted ones are best in this case.

By bottom ones I assume you mean when laying horizontally, right?
I heard the back ones cause the fans inside the 360 to spin faster than they are supposed to and thus wear out, which is when problems occur.

you can also use a laptop cooling pad that sits under the xbox from what i have heard they work a little better. I haven't had any problems so far so I'm not sure what would be best.

I've never had overheating problem with my xbox. It's been on for 16 hours straight on the hottest days of summer, and stayed cool to the touch. Expect for the hot air being expelled out the back.
My friend was telling me yesterday about how he wants a 360, but refuses to buy one until they fix the problem. He used some video of a dude cooking an egg on the insides of an Xbox with the RoD. I thought it was funny how fanboys of one company will make videos about pretty much anything against another company.

Yes, never keep your 360 laying horizontally, it causes issues with ventilation.
You can find numerous vertical stand cooling solutions, such as this,
Intec XBOX 360 Cooling Station (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16874177013)

lol mine's never been anything but horzontal and it's under my bed and has no problem with ventilation. Having it vertical is bad for the drive, and you risk messing up your discs.

You risk messing up your discs anytime you insert a disc into ANY CD slot.

but the risk is greater when your xbox is vertical. Not to mention that it's a lot noisier.

Greg, I love you :D. You just made me spew Fruity Pebbles all over my desk, but it was well worth it.
My Xbox 360 has been horizontal since I got it in December, although I did get the red ring of death about a month or two ago, that isn't caused by it being horizontal. I've never had problems with my '360 outside of that.

I've been having this problem recently, and it go so insufferable that I decided to send my 360 in. A little explanation to why this happens:
The first few generations of Xbox 360s were built with inferior heatsinks (the part that takes the heat away from the components). Because of this, more recent games that have been working to take advantage of the 360 hardware (Halo 3, NFS: Carbon, etc.) will end up overheating the CPU and causing the console to freeze. The more recent generations of the Xbox 360, as well as the 360 Elite and Pro, are all made with MUCH higher quality heatsinks that resolve this issue.
So you have three options at this juncture:
1. Buy a new 360, ensure it's recently manufactured. (I recommend the Xbox 360 Pro, if you can find one)
2. Send your 360 in for repairs. I'm not sure how well this will work yet, still waiting on mine.
3. Buy one of the cooling fan mods. This is risky, might not work, and will ruin your warranty. Only do this if you're planning to buy a new 360 anyway and just want to make your current 360 last until then. Otherwise take choice 2.
