comcast is know for doing that. What you need to do is call them up and explain. And no matter what you do try to stay on the line with an amiercan sales rep. They will usually help you out faster and get the job done. Call centers (over in india) tend to stick to and by the rules with no sympathy often sticking to sterotypes ect when dealing with calls.
After a while on the line and no progress demand that you be transfered to someone who can help you out instead of hearing some guy in india describing why he cant help you.
If it all possible - i'd switch companies.
Call places and see where / how close the central office is to you.
the closer you are the better connection you're going to get.
Look at and compare dl/up rates and ask what the latency rate is .
My boyfriend and I did so and we get decent Hops and better ping since we researched.
avoid AT&T / Bellsouth. or else horrible ping will follow.

AT&T has terrible pings? umm, I'm on AT&T now, and I usually get a ping of approx 53 ms, and down rates of about 600 KBp/s (bytes not bits)
