So today I went on a networking spree and went crazy on Newegg. I totally hate my existing network I have at home. So I decided hey...i want a wireless N network and a wireless G network at the same time! Because if you connect a 802.11g device to a 802.11n network it will slow it down to g speeds. And then I was like hey! I want a NAS too (Network Access Storage) so I built out a system for 1.5 terabytes of storage plus my 300gig external...once I hack it ill have 1.8 terabytes accessible to all my PCs plus FTP from anywhere on the net. Im excited! I will have 3 terabytes of total storage space on my main pc + NAS. What ya'll think?

Networking:

LINKSYS WRT330N 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.3, 802.3u, draft 802.11n Wireless-N Gigabit Gaming Router (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833124084)
LINKSYS WRT54GL IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Wireless-G Broadband Router (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833124190)
LINKSYS WAP54G Wireless-G 54Mbps Access Point (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833124012)
2x LINKSYS WPC300N Wireless-N Notebook Adapter (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16839124003)

NAS:

D-Link DNS-323 2-Bay Network Storage Enclosure (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822155003)
2x Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD7500AAKS 750GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822136131)

Am I crazy? LOL

Total spent after it all: $1080.17

Nah, you're not crazy. Thats actually an excellent and very functional tool for any home containing proficient computer users - especially on that budget.

The FTP functionality would heavily depend on your upload cap. If you're lucky enough to have a great upload rate(or have the extra $ to pay for a business account) the FTP access to your NAS would be invaluable. Whats your rated upload speed?

Being able to access all your files from any computer with a connection to the internet would be sweet.

Just curious, what are you doing for security measures for such a thing? Do you have a hardware based firewall (not the built in router garbage) set up between the NAS and the 'net?

Going to use the Linksys firewall for now. Hopefully will get a cheap box soon and put an Astaro Security Gateway on it, Server 2003 Domain Controller, and Exchange 2003.

And i have 15 mbps down a 2 mbps up with Verizon FIOS.

If i was rich i would love a Cisco ASA for a firewall, Cisco VPN Concentrator, Cisco 2000 series router and 2000 series switch

Haha, it's nice pondering what fun you could have if you were an offspring of Bill Gates.

Sounds good.. I wish FIOS was in my area.. How is it that FIOS isnt in a major outlying town surrounding Hartford CT?!?! Drives me nuts.
