I found this nice editorial while browsing through some other forums, and I think that the guy makes some interresting points. The average consumer will not care that much about the new technology, as it's not a major leap from todays DVDs, and there isn't a convenience gap as there were with VHS => DVD.

The leap is defintely not as big. There's a difference between wanting high-def movies and simple entertainment. Not everyone in the world owns an HD-enabled TV. Me? I'm just fine with the regular DVD right now.

lol panda your so right, i agree totally
I don't entirely agree, I believe that the validity of either of these formats make them completely viable for a successor in the high def age. The major question is will they have enough time to gain market saturation either way before some of the interesting technology in development render the billion dollar investments unwanted?
Its a real interesting debate overall, one i enjoy to keep up on.
