I was wondering about this recently. The question:
-Is Counterstrike a standalone? I know it's free over the internet or you can pay for the retail version, but still?

You only have to "own" Counterstrike (1.6 or Source) in order to play it,but you do have to download/preload the Demo. But they're really small files, and they auto-download through steam if you try to install Counterstrike, so it doesn't really matter all that much.

Yup yup. You do not need half-life to play counterstrike. You could get the multiplayer pack which gives you three multiplayer games on the same engine or you could just buy counterstrike or you could buy it all in one fell sweep. I would buy the games through Steam though (www.steampowered.com) just because more money is given to the developers and not to the publishers.

Yea, you can goto wal-mart nowadays and get dod, cs1.6 and something else for lik $29, or the source package for $39.. (prices estimated). Instead of the full $50 for source. But.. DO NOT INSTALL THE CD... goto steampowered.com d/l the client then enter in your cd-keys..it'll d/l the game (yes, even if you have it installed already).
