I have to disagree with Punkie there. Well... The blackandwhite does look better but If you simply but a color balance over the background I think it would look better with the color. It is a good piece.

You're improving mate :)
Try curves and selective color for balancing colored sigs. Often you need to balance the color between pic and bg. With above mentioned you can do fine.
For the lighting:
Try making an extra layer... Then choose soft round brush size=100 opacity 12%.
Brush with white slightly over parts of the sig where you want light and with black the edges of the sig and where you like to have darkness.
If you brush with white over a face... erase a bit where the eyes are so outcome will still be clear.
If you add the first curves layer then bow the rgb curve a bit to the right to work out the lighting. Downwards you'll influence the shadows and upper you'll work on the light colors... do experiments :)
