Are you a "gaymer"?

If you're gay and love video games, MTV News wants to talk to you about a story we're doing on "gaymers". The recent controversy around the popular PS2 game, "Bully"--in which the main character, Jimmy, can hook-up with guys as well as girls--has shed new light on the place of gays/lesbians in video games and the gaming community.

In your reply, tell us about yourself. What are your favorite games that feature gay themes or characters? How do you feel about the heterocentric (and often homophobic) culture of gaming? Do you think there should be more gay characters in video games? Do you know other "gaymers" and, if so, have you met them through online networking sites like gaygamer.net or gaymer.org?

Would I like to see more gay characters in games? Absolutely! Do I expect to see it happen? Not so long as a majority of games are made in the US.

Frankly, I'd be happy if I didn't have to hear "that was GAY" 10,000 times in almost any random game I join. Most people would never say "that was black" or "that was chinky" but they think nothing of using "that was gay" to refer to anything negative or stupid that happens in a game.

PS Noone take offense at my language. I don't use racial language. My point was to show how using racial terms would be easily recognized as discriminatory, while using gay to refer to negative things is pretty much universally accepted.

My tag used to be UNIQUEGAMERTAG, and I have a secondary tag that is UNIQUEGAYMERTAG. You'll find that most people who discriminate against a group, don't have friends in that group; or aren't aware that they have friends in that group. The more that gay people come out and make people aware that they are there, the more accepted they become.

But yeah, like Unique said, it's not so much the lack of gay characters that bothers me...it's the constant demeaning stuff I hear (demeaning both girls and guys, and gays and straights alike), like "r***!" and "that was gay" and "what a retard!" that kinda stuff.....Now, I know that language takes a while to evolve and stuff...but if we keep using these words in such negative contexts, it implies hate towards homosexuals and whoever it may be targeted. So I guess I'm hoping for somehow to have players more aware of what they're saying. I have no idea how to go about that, except not participating in it....

But still! It would definitely be awesome to have more gay characters in games!

But Addie, that word as you know has been warped to be represented in a different meanings by different people. Like for us, of course that it would be more offensive, but other straight (and maybe some gay ppl) take it out of slang. Its kinda like how the N word got warped from what it ment in the 1960s to what it means now to the younger generation. Its just slang but I do agree that people need to stop saying this.

That's fine...it's your opinion...however, i don't think that by blocking gay characters or content on television will HELP kids mature and grow, it will make everything worse: make gays portrayed even more commonly as "wrong" and "unnatural" (two words i often see against gays), segregate different sexualities even more with either hate, fear, or confusion, and overall, it would just reflect that the U.S. isn't ready to call itself a "free" country with equal rights for all........if you don't want your kids to see it, that's fine. don't buy the game/movie/channel with gay references/content.

Yeah, if you have issues with it, dont buy it, and if you do know that it has gay references in it then dont play it around your kids if you dont want them to see it.

yea.. I'd be one of 'em. lol I used to HATE it, and would yell at people who said it.. My CS team broke me of that tho.. They corrupted me :p I honestly don't think its that big of a deal because people dont say it to be mean.. you can tell it when someone says shiz to you and mean it. and for the record yes I am a gay girl gamer....but I don't like to publicly say I'm gay or a girl while I game....just like when I was an admin for multiple servers for counterstrike source....I just want to play in peace, but recently somethin major has happend to me and since that event(before my computer crashed a week ago) a friend of mine from another clan nearly banned a guy on her server because he was being rude and joking about things I didn't find funny, and she was watching over me while I played to make sure I was ok.....
