That looks like it could be a great event. I second what Snake said though. So many events that would be good to go to.

Yes indeed, so this is working with VGL, impressive. Should be a fun event, although they can't match he scale E3 was I'd expect, i'm sure it'll be amazing all the same. With digital life at the end of september though, it'll be hard for me to determine what to go to :-p

To replace E3, it takes a bit more than just setting up a new event in the same location as E3, it will require industry support.
Concidering E3 being downsized was somewhat due to the exhibitors not getting enough bang for their buck, I got a feeling that this new event will not be anywhere near E3.
The later years, E3 wasn't that important - the only reason it was somewhat important was due to the fact that developers often revealed new games and/or screenshots/videos/demos during E3, and if you didn't have a great product, chances are you'r game would be a drop in the ocean. Internet have changed a lot of this, people have easier access to news and information on upcoming games, so getting your profiled on a major gaming website could be more important than dropping a tiny bomb at E3.

It won't be nearly the same scale. E3 was an understood event that every single company was bound to attend every single year. The entertainment factor was unprecedented, and the money spent during those few days was enormous. I really feel bad for the people who won't get to experience an E3.
But, with this event being open to all comers, the number of people there will be larger than ever. Meaning that the lines to play games will be longer than ever. 8 hour wait to play the Wii at E3, a closed event? Even worse for a public event.

It could be an interesting event to see it evolve but don't be surprised if there are a lot of companies taking a wait and see attitude. New events are hard to attract exhibitors of the highest caliber in their first year. The hosting company has a pretty extensive list though, with MacWorld in their lineup of shows they can leverage that event to gain exposure for this one.
In terms of E3 being a mandatory event, well that was becoming the question of the exhibitors and also consequently may have lead to the demise of the show as we knew it in the later years. The show was plain expensive to show off your goods at and in most cases the companies held pre-E3 events where all the top shelf media and buyers were invited. The show had grown so large that it was very hard to secure time with the media and buyers at the actual event. The exposure time to these 2 groups was a major factor of what E3 was originally created for. So why, if all the major software vendors were holding their own pre-E3 events anyway, would they also want to spend millions upon millions of dollars on an event targetted at these same people when they weren't reaching them?
An issue I see with this though is that it is public so you won't get the same content you would at a closed event. Compare the content seen at Digital Life to E3, I don't want to make up numbers but I think it safe to say that the majority of what was shown and/or talked about at E3 were not present at DL. I'm not saying DL is a bad show at all, it's just a different type of show as this new one seems to be. You'd be best not to compare to E3 until you see the buy in from your favourite publishers and what content they show.
Just my 2 cents. I wouldn't mind a new trip to the west coast in the fall though :p

I think the best part about a show like this (which is open to the public) is that everyone can attend... and thus I can meet all my friends across the internet who have the ability to make it out there. :)
Since it's not a long drive for me, I'll be there - I heard they were going to do some tournaments and stuff there too, but I guess that's all still speculation.
It won't be like the E3 of yore (it can't - they just don't want to spend the money like they did for E3) it should still be a fun place to meet all the people you play games with. :)

Looks like it will be fun. but I think I'll wait till the verdict for the first year. Got PAX commin up in Aug at their new facility this year, two or three times bigger than the last place they held it at. And its actually in Seattle this year. Washington state Convention center.
Sounds really cool not far from where I live so I'll be there for sure!!! Can't wait!! :p
