Drum Hell 2 FAQ

Update

Drum hell 2 has ended, with both H2O Phr34k and H2O Someguy913 lasting through ALL 533 Songs to nab a new world record! Please browse the scores list and other tabs for more information on the event, contest, drummers, and more. Thanks to the tens of thousands who turned in to be a part of this incredible event, you made the effort and stress worth it. From a very tired Drum Hell crew, we hope you enjoyed the show and please visit us at http://pmsclan.com/ in the future to become part of the community

What Is Drum Hell 2?

The short version: Drum hell 2 is a charity and world record gaming marathon! Two of the best Rock Band drummers in the world will be dueling through every single song in the Rock Band series, an estimated 530+ by New Years. The event will benefit the United Way Foundation.

When will this event be held?

January 2nd, 2009 until it's complete! (An optimistic guess pegs this between 40 and 60 hours)

How do I attend / where is the event at?

Our drummers will be safely squirreled away at a super secret location somewhere in the Canadian Wilderness. But you can attend right from the comfort of your own home. Keep your eyes on PMSClan.com as we'll have the site covered with links to watch the entire stream live right here at DrumHell.PMSClan.com

How do I view the Setlist / Score results?

The entire setlist and scores will be published live right here on DrumHell.PMSClan.com Simply select the appropriate tab to view the score results or the setlist.

What are these prizes?

The drummers will get "FC" (full combo) on some songs throughout the event, meaning they played perfectly hitting every note and not playing any extra notes. Whenever either gets a Full Combo, a link will appear on the page which users can click on and enter! During the short breaks (every 8 hours) winners will be announced for a variety of prizes. Users must be registered on www.PMSClan.com to win, and some restrictions apply. Full contests details are available on the Contest page.

How can I help out?

We would love to have everyone be an integral part of this historic event! The first thing you can do to help is to simply spread the word. Mention it to friends, on blogs, twitter, etc. Secondly make sure to watch the show and sign up on our forums. Both drummers will be taking donations for the United Way, and your financial support is crucial to make this event a success! Donation information will be available on PMSClan.com as the event approaches. For any media inquires or requests to sponsor the event, please contact PR@pmsclan.com

What hardware do they use?

Both H2O Phr34k and H2O Someguy913 have created custom kits for rock band, and both kits range between about $1400 and $2000 each. We'll have detailed information about their kits prior to Drum Hell 2 available on the Players & Kits tab.

I can haz gamertags to play with you?

Unfortunately it would be impossible to give everyone a slot in any of our musician's xbox live friend's list, and they would be up another 60 hours deleting messages. Fortunately, there's another route. Simply register on the forums at www.PMSClan.com and you can find recruitment information about the PMS | H2O Rock band division, as well as chat with all of our members!

Are H2O Phr34k and H2O Someguy913 drummers in real life?

It would be difficult to be so skilled at Rock Band without having some form of percussion / musical background. Phr34k can be found on Ventrilo serenading the community with his acoustic guitar (or singing, or any other number of instruments), and Someguy913 is a drummer as well with years of experience. Please check the "Players & Kits" tab for more information about the drummers and the equipment they are playing on.

What is PMS Clan and H2O Clan? How do I join?

Founded in late 2002, Pandora's Mighty Soldiers (PMS Clan) is the world's largest competitive multi-platform online female gaming organization, with the mission of providing a positive and competitive environment for women gamers. Shortly after its inception, H2O Clan was born to encourage male involvement in the community and has exploded in both population and talent. With well over 600 females and nearly 800 male gamers worldwide in the clans, PMS and H2O members work hard to promote the idea of a more diversified gaming landscape. Proud team sponsors include Alienware, ATI, Sapphire, Platronics, Patriot Memory, DarkStar Communications and Pro Gamer. Additional and recruitment information is available at www.PMSClan.com

I'd like to do a news story on this, can I get a quote / interview from the drummers?

Definitely! We are more than happy to help set up an interview process with these two gentlemen, but we do want them to get a chance to sleep after the conclusion of the event. Interview can be done both before and after the event itself, please contact PR@pmsclan.com for information on scheduling an interview. If you do a news story on the event, make sure to email us at PR@pmsclan.com so we can keep an updated list of the news sites it's posted on.

Kits
  H2O Phr34k H2O Someguy913
Drumpads Roland PD-8 Dual Trigger Pads - 8.5" rubber pad with solid metal core, piezo main sensor, contact rim detection. Roland V-Drums with woven mesh heads, one 12" snare, three 10" toms, KD-8 kick trigger
Brains Roland TMC-6 Percussion Module Roland TD-6V Percussion Sound Module
Drumsticks Los Cabos - Rock Your Band Mike Portnoy Signature Pro-Mark 420s
Pedals Roland FD-8 Hi-Hat Controller, modified to use the Rock Band stock pedal sensor DW 5000 Turbo Single Pedal, dual-chain
Other Cool Stuff The kit is designed to be travel friendly, using a non-standard rack setup and quick assembly/tear-down. The rack consists of a Yamaha Cymbal Boom Stand with a Gibraltar Rack Cross Bar (cut to fit inside a travel bag). The Stock Controller module has an MSA-P MIDI Converter chip that decodes the MIDI signals from the TMC-6 and outputs the 5V pulses to the stock module face buttons. I use a custom converter box to connect my Roland kit to the Xbox 360 for use in Rock Band. The box consists of a MIDI input jack connected to an MSA-P MIDI Converter, which then connects to the motherboard of a Rock Band stock drum kit, which then in turn runs back out to the 360. The box converts the MIDI signal output from the TD-6V module into simple relay signals which are then sent to specific soldering points on the Rock Band drum kit's circuit board, which trigger the correct drum pad notes and send that information out to the 360.

About the H2Os

Its H2O, not h2zero

H2O Someguy913

As you've no doubt discovered by now, I'm just some guy. My real name is Calin, and I'm a junior at the University of Texas at Dallas, studying political science and specializing in political theory and philosophy. I was born and raised in Grand Prairie, Texas, though I am currently living on the UT Dallas campus in Richardson.

I started playing drums about 5 years ago when my parents graciously got me a 5-piece Pacific CX Maple acoustic drum kit for Christmas. However, the reason I had wanted a drum set was not just some abstract interest in percussion; for 2 or 3 years I had been avidly playing Konami's Drummania at a local arcade, as well as plenty of other Bemani titles. That game got me completely hooked on drumming, as well as developing my hand-eye coordination, rhythm, limb independence, and recognition of basic drum patterns.

By the time Rock Band was announced in early 2007, the arcade with Drummania had sadly shut down. When I heard about Rock Band, all I really thought about was the drums aspect, hoping I could recapture the great times I had had playing Drummania, but at home instead of shelling out money week after week at an arcade. When I picked up my copy of Rock Band in November of 2007 on release day, I had no idea how much I would end up enjoying and playing the game, as I didn't have very high expectations initially.

While it was awkward playing this new type of drumming at first, I was still able to make it through the Expert drums set list with relative ease by my second day of playing the game thanks to my previous drumming and rhythm game experiences. Just for grins, I decided to go check out the Xbox Live leaderboards after completing the Expert set list to see where I stood. To my stunned surprise, I was in 2nd place overall on the drum leaderboards after sight-reading my way through the game! At that point, realizing that 1st place was amazingly within my reach, I decided to devote some effort to getting better at the game, finally becoming active in the Scorehero community and learning all that I could about the title. In mid-December of 2007 I finally took 1st place from the top-ranked drummer of the time.

By the time Rock Band 2 came out in September of 2008, I had somehow apparently managed to establish myself not only as a competitive Rock Band player, but as a player with a fairly widely-known reputation. I'm still getting used to the idea of being "e-famous". I held first place for a little while, then our very own Phr34k took 1st in a Scorehero blitz, nabbing over 40 FCs in about 20 hours. He and I battled it out for a little bit, and I emerged on top for another short while. Currently Angels2003 has the lead on score hero, but it promises to be a very interesting competitive season! I can't wait to be able to devote more time to hardcore competitive drumming.

As far as musical background goes, I cut my drumming teeth primarily on Switchfoot, Evanescence, and Linkin Park. Don't ask why, they just seem to have the type of drumming that would be simple enough for me to learn on, yet just varied enough to keep me interested. About a year later (and 6 months of drum lessons), one of my friends introduced me to Dream Theater. The drumming astounded me. I knew I would never be able to even come close to drumming of that caliber, but I couldn't stop myself from trying. So, I essentially dived headlong into Dream Theater, trying to learn to play any of their songs that I could, and mostly failing miserably at it. Somehow, after about 6 months of this, I suddenly realized I wasn't failing miserably any more. I began to actually be able to keep up with several songs, playing along with it while listening to it. I have since learned near-perfect covers of many Dream Theater songs, including the entire Scenes from a Memory album. This experience has had me hooked on the progressive genre ever since, particularly Rush, Symphony X, Neal Morse, Liquid Tension Experiment, and Opeth.

H2O Phr34k

I'm a crazy person, as per my online handle. Real names' Sean Feica (fee-kuh), hailing from my hometown, London Ontario. I'm currently working in a local winter retail outlet by day, co-leading the co-ed PMS|H2O Rock Band and Guitar Hero Division by evening, and working for ScoreHero.com as a moderator/programmer/PR/whatever-else-is-needed-if-I-have-the-spare-time by night. I'm also a programmer for PMSClan.com during my 25th hour of the day.

I've been a percussionist for several years, starting at Grade 8 in school. Over the years in High School I quickly developed my musical abilities, focusing on Classical Guitar, Percussion (mallets, auxillary, hand, marching), various vocal styles, as well as composition. Continuing my percussion studies after High School, I performed with a professional Concert Band for a few years, named Encore. We recorded a couple albums and did some touring around Ontario. On the gaming side, late in my High School career I discovered the joys of rhythm games through Dance Dance Revolution. Eventually working at my local arcade as the manager and arcade tech, I heard about a tournament in Toronto. I attended, met a lot of awesome people, and became a part of a great community that is now RGCanada.com. Through there I learned about all the other rhythm games available and became absolutely hooked.

When Guitar Hero began taking the rhythm gaming world by storm, I jumped on board and started putting a heavy amount of time into the game, and shortly after became involved in the community at ScoreHero.com. Moving up to staff just before Guitar Hero 2 was released, I quickly cemented my place in the plastic instrument world. Towards the release of Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band, myself and several other staff members from ScoreHero were brought out to both the Neversoft and Harmonix studios to check out the new games long before they hit the streets. Quickly catching on to the drums in Rock Band left my appetite whet with anticipation of the game's release.

With Rock Bands official debut in November 2007, I focused on being a top-tier drummer. After going through several stock kits in frustration, I built my fancy-named "Uber Kit" and continued towards the top. In July 2008 with my Uber Kit on hand, and the recent announcement of the 500+ songs by the end of the year, I ponied up and did the first Drum Hell, playing 235 songs in 26.5 hours. Now with Rock Band 2 out, and well over 500 tracks, the last month or so has been pure preparations for Drum Hell 2, which promises to be quite the show.

LIVE United

United Way of America is the national organization dedicated to leading the United Way movement. Local United Ways create long-lasting community change by addressing the underlying causes of the most significant local issues. Common focus areas include helping children and youth achieve their potential, promoting financial stability and independence, and improving people’s health. Their goal is to create long-lasting changes by addressing the underlying causes of problems.
Drum Hell 2 fits perfectly within the LIVE United concept – after all, this is truly a community driven event. Your donations are crucial to making this event a success, and even if it’s only a little, every dollar helps. We've set a very ambitious goal of raising $10,000 dollars for this charity, and we can only reach anywhere near that if you help us. Much like a charity concert, the only payment our musicians recieve is the knowledge that any money made goes to a great cause that will help to make a few individual's 2009 just a little bit better.

“We decided to go with United Way because of their programs for those financially in need; for either schooling, housing, social works, and community services. With the shape the economy is in, there is no better choice available in my eyes. The ability to help so many people across the nation from doing an event such as Drum Hell is more than worthwhile in the end.”

Stay tuned and enjoy the event, simply use the donation form available during the event to submit donations, it only takes a few seconds. Even if the economic situation makes donating difficult, consider contacting your local united way to find out how you can help through community support, volunteering, and much more. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Drum Hell 2: Guinness World Record Breaking Charity Event

December 26th 2008, SAN ANTONIO: PMS Clan is proud to announce a charity weekend of historic Rock Band drumming, supporting the United Way Foundation with renowned gamers from H2O Clan. At approximately 9AM EST (-5GMT) on January 2nd 2009, Sean “H2O Phr34k” Feica and Calin “H2O Someguy913” Scoggins will begin playing Rock Band 2 on expert drums in a dual, competitive, effort to break the Guinness World Record for longest continuous Rock Band drumming on the Drum Hell 2 charity event!

Last July, Sean Feica astounded viewers by finishing all 235 Rock Band songs on expert level, to near perfection…and got immortalized in the 2009 Guinness World Records Gaming Edition for the 26.5 hour marathon. While still flushed with victory and short on sleep, H2O Phr34k announced plans for an even bigger, more impressive sequel in 2009. That promise has now evolved into the upcoming Drum Hell 2; the song odyssey is expected to last for an estimated 60+ hours and contain hundreds of thousands of notes.

With the addition of H2O Clan’s newest member and arguably the best Rock Band drummer in the world, Someguy913; the event will take on a competitive angle as both drummers compete against each other head-to-head on their own custom kits with a high definition Sharp AQUOS TV. Songs will be played in order of increasing difficulty, bringing a whole new meaning to “save the best for last.”

PMS Clan will be hosting the Drum Hell 2 online event, where viewers and donators will be able to watch the live stream in its entirety on the event’s webpage. Spectators can also chat, keep track of progress with detailed scores, and donate to the marathon with all proceeds benefiting the United Way Foundation. The decision to have the United Way as the beneficiary for the Drum Hell 2 Charity event was simple for Sean.

“We decided to go with United Way because of their programs for those financially in need; for either schooling, housing, social works and/or community services.” Feica said. “With the shape the economy is in, there is no better choice available in my eyes. The ability to help so many people across the nation from doing an event such as Drum Hell is more than worthwhile in the end.”

As an added bonus, when either drummer plays a song perfectly, PMS Clan will be providing registered viewers with an opportunity to win a multitude of prizes from sponsors and partners! More information is available at http://drumhell.pmsclan.com

With an estimated 530+ song titles available by January 1st, 2009, Drum Hell 2 will be THE definitive gaming event to mark the New Year as Sean and Calin prepare to set new World Records. With such a Herculean effort required to maintain drumming of this caliber, the question is not when—but if—one or both of them will make it through the entire set list!

“Sean and I have both done drumming marathons before and know how exhausting it can be” explains Calin. “Yet at 60+ hours the only way we'll make it through this is by feeding off one another's energy and the support of both the live and internet audiences."

A representative from the Guinness book of World Records will be on hand to verify when, by whom, and to what degree the new record will stand.
