Harpy PMS: So Mercury, tell us a little bit about yourself!
H2O Mercury: I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa -- it’s not quite like what was depicted in District 9, there are fewer spaceships -- and moved over to the UK as a kid. I am a recent graduate from the University of Central Lancashire having achieved a BSc in Computer Games Development. I would love to become part of the gaming industry one day and specifically work on game agent AI.
I am film enthusiast and can’t wait for the release of The Hobbit later this year. It's going to be awesome! As a brony, I am also stoked for the new season of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic next month -- Luna is the best pony.
Harpy PMS: How did you come to the PMS clan?
H2O Mercury: Well, I initially discovered the clan through my Halo 3 collector’s edition bonus material disc. If I recall, the voice actor of Cortana did an interview with the group; The LAN parties and social atmosphere were exactly what I want from my gaming. I simply used the awesome power of Google to find the clan website and, in 2008, I signed up to the PMS|H2O EU Call of Duty 4 360 Division. I have stuck with the community ever since, even coming over to the US in 2011 for PAX East, which I loved. It was great being able to meet the faces who keep the organization going.
Harpy PMS: What positions have you held in the clan?
H2O Mercury: My first staff position was recruitment manager for PMS|H2O EU Modern Warfare 2 360 Division; I shared the role with my now PMS, Fatality -- who is totally awesome by the way. I became the division leader shortly before the release of MW3. I was also the unofficial event organizer for Eurogamer Expo; it’s like PAX but not as cool. I should probably mention that I am in the process of stepping down in preparation for Black Ops II, but rest assured my successor is going to do an awesome job. I intend to continue my role as recruitment manager for the PMS|H2O EU Battlefield NA division for the foreseeable future.
Harpy PMS: I know many of the readers may be North American and you are in the European side of the clan. Would you explain how the EU Divisions operate?
H2O Mercury: It’s a little odd at times really; the EU and Australian side of the clan has seen some major ups and downs. Currently, I think the EU Call of Duty Division is the last console based division left, which is a bit sad. In our division we try and keep things social; I have done mixers for our division to help them mingle with the wider community. I would really like to break the isolation we currently find ourselves in and show my division members they are part of a much larger community with some amazing people who are really worth knowing. As a small division, we also only have one scheduled practice per day with competitive practices held every Tuesday and Thursday for our Game Battles team.
Harpy PMS: Have you been gaming all your life? If so, what games and systems did you play?
H2O Mercury: The first game I can remember playing was Dune 2 on PC. I must have been five at the time. The early Westwood RTS series kept me entertained as a kid; I can remember getting my first computer and a copy of command and conquer. Still probably my favorite RTS game to date, it's such a shame to see what happened to Westwood Studios. My first console was a Nintendo 64. I played Goldeneye and then later Perfect Dark to death. Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart were beastly party games, too.
Harpy PMS: How did you come up with your gamertag?
H2O Mercury: Hah, easy one. I have been “Mercury” since Halo 2 -- gosh first launch of Live was donkey's years ago. The name was taken from Freddie Mercury, lead singer for Queen.
Harpy PMS: Do you have any shout outs?
H2O Mercury: Yes! I would like to say "Hi" to all of the PMS|H2O EU CoD 360 division and, of course, my fellow Battleponies from the PMS|H2O NA Battlefield 360 division. You all rock.
Harpy PMS: Can you give us 5 random facts about yourself?
1) I am a huge fan of Ridley Scott’s work.
2) I really dislike mushrooms. I scrape them off my pizza should I ever find any.
3) I have done the world’s highest commercial bungee jump.
4) I love cooking! Learning new dishes is fun; I love trying new foreign cuisine.
5) I had ADHD at school and used to get in trouble a lot.
